I've acquired an old Canon PowerShot A70, which according to what I've
been able to read about it ought to have a been a pretty good camera for
its day (and considerably in advance of anything I need).

Unfortunately, when I power it up via my universal mains adaptor, I find
it seems to do everything *except* actually take pictures.

All the menu screens etc on the LCD screen work, but no image preview
appears on the screen and when I press the shutter button completely
black JPEGs are likewise created on the CompactFlash card. Is this
camera dead or is it something as simple as the shutter not opening...?

Hmm, given that sound is recorded OK in video mode it sounds like the
Canon dud CCD image sensor problem - shutter is visibly opening :-(
